"Rebetiko" (some also call it "the Greek blues") is the name of the Greek urban folk music, that appeared in late 19th century and acquired its familiar form, roughly up to the third decade of 20th century. Evolved through poverty, immigration and oppression this musical genre expressed mostly the grief of the lower social classes. This original and unpretentious folk expression, the basis of modern Greek folk music, is now widely considered as a precious cultural inheritance gaining admirers all over the world.

So far, however, there has only been this kind of sheet music presenting just a general view of the songs. "Nine Eight" is a newly founded book series intending to present Greek folk music in all its great rhythmic and harmonic complexity and its magical emotion, through music score collections written in as much detail and accuracy as possible.
